Endocrine System Flashcards
Endocrine Glands
- Have NO ducts
* Pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries/testes
Exocrine Glands
- HAVE ducts
* Sweat,tear, salivary glands, liver
Hormone
A chemical produced by an endocrine gland
And transported n the bloodstream
To act in another part of the body
Why is the Pancreas a dual-function
Hormone (insulin) secretion & non-hormone (enzyme) secretions
What is the chemical nature of many hormones?
Protein
Insulin
Secreted in the pancreas
Causes glucose to be removed from the blood
Thyroxine
Secreted by thyroid
Controls metabolism
Human Growth Hormone
Secreted by the pituitary gland
Elongated bones in the skeleton
Parathormone
Secreted by the parathyroid
Controls the release of calcium from bones
Adrenalin
Adrenal
Allows for response to stress
Symptom of Hyperthyroidism
Goitre
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Over-active thyroid
SYMPTOMS: Loss of weight
TREATMENT: Kill part of thyroid
HYPOTHYROIDISM
Under-active thyroid
SYMPTOMS: Weight gain, goitre
TREATMENT: Tablets of thyroxine
Feedback
When the level of a hormone controls the production of another hormone
Negative Feeback
- Thyroxine levels correct, TSH not produced
* No more thyroxine produced
