Ear Flashcards
What is the Outer Ear filled with
Air
Pinna
Made up of cartilage
Collects vibrations from the air and channels them into air
Auditory canal
Carries vibrations to the eardrum
Eardrum
A tightly stretched membrane
Vibrates when stimulated by vibrations in the auditory canal
Ossicles
3 bones Hammer Anvil Stirrup - smallest bone in the body Amplify vibrations and pass them to oval window
Eustachian Tube
Not really part of the ear
Connects middle ear to pharynx
Stabilises pressure in ear
Inner ear is filled with
Lymph
Cochlea
Spiral tube that functions in hearing
How do we hear
- Vibrations pass into the lymph in the cochlea through the oval window
- As they pass they stimulate receptors that form the organ of Corti
- Impulses pass from these receptors to the cerebrum along the auditory nerve
3 Semi-Circular Canals
At right angles to each other
Functions in balance
How do we Balance
- Receptors in the semicircular canals defect when our head is not stable
- They sens impulses to the cerebellum of of the brain through the vestibular nerve
Hearing Disorder
Glue ear
Cause
Too much fluid collecting in middle ear
Build-up of fluid is often from a viral infection
Symptoms
Some loss of hearing
Pain or discomfort
Corrective Measures
Decongestant drugs break up fluid and allow it to drain through Eustachian tubes
Grommets placed in ear drums
