Chapter 6: Cells Flashcards
Semi-permeable membrane
Allows some molecules freely in and out and others to enter
Cytoplasm
A medium where chemical reactions can occur
Nucleus
Controls the cells activities
Cell membrane
Controls what enters and exits the cell
Made up of phospholipids and protein in constant motion
Phosphate - water loving - hydrophilic
Lipids - water hating - hydrophobic
Nuclear pore
Allows RNA to enter and exit the nucleus
Chromatin/DNA
Contains genetic information of the cell
Ribosomes
Made from RNA, located in the cytoplasm
Needed for protein-synthesis
Mitochondria
Site of cellular respiration, producing energy
They have their own DNA and can replicate themselves
Vacuole
Store cell sap, cell water, sugars, salt and pigments
Cell wall
Shape, structure and support to the plant
Chloroplasts
Site of photosynthesis
Have their own DNA and replicates by themselves
Eukaryotic
Prokaryotic cells
Cells that do not have organelles surrounded by membranes and do not have a true nucleus .eg, bacteria
Eukaryotic cells
Cells that have a membrane-bound organelles and a true nucleus.eg, plants animals and fungi
Phosphate
Hydrophilic
Water-loving
Lipids
Hydrophobic
Water-hating
