Local Anasthetics Flashcards
What are local anasthetics
This are drugs given to the body to make it loose sensation
Make it numb
Local anasthetics mechanism of action
They work by reducing the permeability of NA+ (sodium ion) in nerves
There by inhibiting depolarization and generation of action potential
The structure of local anasthetics
They are hydrophilic secondary or tertiary amine linked to a lipohillic aromatic compound by an ester bond or amide bond
Local anasthetics with amide bond include
Lidocaine
Prilocaine
Etidocaine
Buvivacaine
Anasthetics with ester bond include
Cocaine
Procaine
Chloroprocaine
Tetracaine
Difference between amide anasthetics and ester anasthetics
Amide anasthetics last longer and are not broken down by plasma cholinesterase
Ester anasthetics don’t last long because they are easily attacked by cholinesterase
Spinal anasthetics is given to what mater
Arachnoid mater
