Liver: Catabolism of lipids + Bile synthesis Flashcards
In what part of the hepatocytes are triglycerides stored
Cytoplasm
In what form are triglycerides deposited in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes
As a single fatty droplet
Describe fatty acid catabolism
- CoA is attached to -COOh molecule at the end of the fatty acid
- ATP -> AMP + 2Pi
- Fatty acid-CoA compound undergoes beta-oxidation
- Acetyl CoA splits off fatty acid
- 2H+ trasnferred to NAD+ and FAD+
- FADH and NADH enter OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION
- ATP Produced
- CoA binds to fatty acid + cycle is repeated
- Continues to lose two carbon atoms per CoA until all has been transferred to CoA
- Production of Co2 and ATP via Krebs’ Cycle + Oxidative Phosphorylation
Role of Lipoprotein Lipase
Hydrolyses triglycerides in lipoprotein (chylomicrons and VLDL) to 2 fatty acids and a monoglyceride molecule)
Role of Hepatic Lipase
Converted IDL to LDL
Where is Hepatic Lipase expressed
Liver and Adrenal Glands
Why is LDL more useful than IDL
LDL carries more triglycerides
How often is bile secreted
Continuously
What hormone is excreted in bile
Steroid hormones
Tip: Cholesterol produces steroid hormones and that is mainly excreted in the bile so, yeah.
What happens to bile stored in the gallbladder
Stored + Concentrated
Why does bile concentrate in the gallbladder
Due to absorption of Na and Cl
Where can the gallbladder be palpated
Lies at right mid-clavicular line at the costal margin
What vein connects the liver to the GI Tract
Portal Vein
