Liver Flashcards
Where is the liver located?
in cranial abdomen just behind the diaphragm, next to pancreas
Where does the liver receive blood from?
The hepatic portal vein from digestive tract and hepatic artery
Which vein does blood from liver leave through?
Hepatic vein which joins the vena cava
Name 4 functions of the liver
- Bilirubin metabolism
- Bile acid metabolism
- Carbohydrate metabolism
- Lipid metabolism
- Immune function
- Foreign substance (xenobiotic) metabolism
- Protein synthesis
Name 3 ways the liver is involved in protein synthesis
- Albumin
- Clotting factors
- Complement
- Transport proteins
- Lipoproteins
- Acute phase proteins
- Convert ammonia from amino acid break down into urea
Name 3 purposes of bile
Get rid of waste products (bilirubin, xenobiotics, cholesterol)
Facilitate digestion
Provide a buffer to neutralize acid
What is a gallbladder?
pouch-like organ in upper-right part of tummy – stores bile from liver to help break down fatty foods
Is the gallbladder essential for survival?
No
When is bilirubin produced?
When haemoglobin is broken down
Name 3 animals that do not have a gallbladder?
Horses
Rats
Elephants
What does a larger gallbladder indicate?
That an animal has been starved
Which duct transports bile to the duodenum?
The common bile duct
Name the 4 bile ducts of the biliary duct system
The right hepatic duct
The left hepatic duct
Cystic duct
Common bile duct
What is the function of the cystic duct?
To carry bile from the gallbladder to to common hepatic duct for drainage
Which bile ducts drain the sides of the liver?
the right and left hepatic ducts
