limbic system Flashcards
anterior commissure connects
two halves of the olfactory system = anterior to the columns of the fornix
limbic system influences
endocrine system
autonomic nervous system
limbic system functions
controls emotions and emotional responses
mood
motivation
pain and pleasure sensations
limbic system:
cortical areas
deeper structures
- septal area, parahippocampal gyrus, cingulate gyrus
- hippocampal , fornix ,amygdala , The mammillary bodies , ant nucleui of thalamus
the Papez circuit
Limbic structures interconnected by the fornix, mammillothalamic tract, the stria terminalis ,the cingulum
Describe the Papez circuit
Hippocampus → fornix → mammillary body → mammillothalamic fibres→ thalamus (anterior nucleus) → cingulum→ entorhinal cortex → hippocampal formation
hippocampus
function
damage results in
- associative learning and memory
- amnesia
amygdala
function
lesions cause
connected to the..
- reproduction, fear and aggression, and modulation of the autonomic and neuroendocrine systems
- docile behaviour
- hypothalamus via stria terminalis , also connected to thalamus and neocortex
Septal area
functions
lesions cause
- Relief of fear, docile behaviour and stress
- agressive behvaiour
Cingulate gyrus
how does it communicate with hypothalamus
function
- mammillothalamic tract
- Control of emotional and visceral responses, aggressive behaviour
Thalamus
connects brainstem to cerebrum
