IIP Contrast Media for target volume delineation Flashcards
Define the term contrast media
compound used to enhance contrast of a structure in medical imaging
Why do we use contrast media in localisation?
1.normal tissue and tumour definition can be improved by oral and IV, which helps define GI tract and vascular structures of other tissues
2.enhance tumour from surrounding normal tissues, thus improving delineation of gross target volume
applies to tumours in the brain
Methods of contrast administration
1. Orally
oral contrast used to visualised GI tract
barium or water soluble gastrografin
Methods of contrast administration
2. Rectally
used to outline rectum
Contraindications to Oral and Rectal Contrast
GI perforation
GI obstruction
GI tract Diverticulitis
- Intravenously
IV contrast used to
visualize tumour mass , blood vessels and uninary system
When to use IV contrast
imaging for oncology
to define treatment area for RT planning
Contraindications to IV Contrast
patient who have had a bad reaction to IV contrast before
impaired renal functions
taking certain diabetic drugs
IV Contrast: Other Contraindications pt1
History of multiple allergies requiring medical treatment
effect on fetus and babies is unknown … pregnancy and lactating females
potential pulmonary effects -asthma
FOR PERSONAL USE :
what does Contraindications mean
Anything (including a symptom or medical condition) that is a reason for a person to not receive a particular treatment or procedure because it may be harmful.
- Previous reactions to IV contrast
incidence of severe adverse reactions increases if patient has previously had a adverse reaction to it before
increases the risk by 5 fold
- Impaired renal function
IV contrast is secreted from kidney and can affect kidney function
