Pharmacy Technician License/Registration Period?
Yes: during any time of employment. If you do not, you may be subject to disciplinary sanctions (657-3.3) .
A pharmacist-intern with a current registration or a pharmacist with a current license is not required to obtain a CPhT to work as a pharmacy technician.
Who Can Apply to be a Pharmacy Technician?
A Certified Pharmacy Technician or a Technician Trainee
Pharmacy Technician CE Hours for Renewal?
As required to maintain national certification. The only CEs are for those working in immunizations or a telepharmacy setting (657-3.5).
Pharmacy Technician Special CE Requirements?
If Technician Gives Vaccines [657-3.17(3)c]:
At least one hour of ACPE-approved CE labeled 06-T or 06-P.
If Telepharmacy Technician [657-13.11[4]):
Two hours in each of the ACPE-approved CE categories:
- Rx Errors / Patient Safety
- Pharmacy Law
Pharmacy Technician Application Fee?
CPhT (657-3.10):
$40 biannual renewal
Trainee [657-3.9(1)]:
$20 annual fee
Trainee Application is good for one year except in exceptions listed in 657-3.9
- Renewal ($20 - Nonrefundable): trainee must submit renewal of registration in exceptional circumstances if they are unable to complete national certification at least 30 days prior to expiration date of registration.
- Reactivation ($20 - Nonrefundable): previously registered trainee must submit application if they were unable to sit for national certification prior to leaving the practice of pharmacy.
Pharmacy Technician Requirements?
(Exam, PTCB, Education, Drug Test, Background Check, etc.)
CPhT (657-3.5):
Must maintain national certification and IA certification during any period of employment.
* A Registered CPhT shall provide to the board written notice of any disciplinary or enforcement action imposed by any licensing agency or regulatory authority (with unredacted documents). This must be done no later than 30 days after the final action (657-3.30)
Trainee (657-3.9):
In the process of obtaining national certification and shall register with the board as a trainee. The registration shall be issued for 1 year and shall not be renewed with the exceptions of renewal/reactivation.
Pharmacy Technician Renewal Period?
CPhT [657-3.10(2)]:
Expires on date the national certification expires.
Trainee [657-3.9(2)]:
Expires on the last day of the registration month - 12 months following the date of registration.
