Lecture 8 - Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Sensory modalities of cranial nerves?
general somatic (skin), general visceral (viscera), special somatic (sight, sound, balance) and special visceral (taste, smell)
Motor modalities of cranial nerves?
general somatic motor (skeletal muscles), general visceral motor (smooth muscles of gut) and special visceral motor (pharyngeal arches)
Only contralateral working CN?
trochlear
CNI: Olfactory pathway?
through cribriform plate to become olfactory bulb then olfactory tract, connects to limbic system
CNII: Optic nerve pathway?
progress from retina to optic chiasm, become optic tracts, through lateral geniculate nucleus then becomes optic radiators to visual cortex
CN III: Occulomotor?
most external eye muscle control: elevation, depression, abduction and adduction
CN IV: Trochlear?
depression and intrusion (superior obllique muscle)
CN VI: Abducens?
abduction (lateral rectus muscle)
CN V: Trigeminal?
sensory: face sinuses and teeth; motor: mastication
CN V: Trigeminal - splits of the semilunar ganglion?
opthalamic, maxillary, mandibular
CN VII: Facial?
muscles of the face, glands, sensory of anterior 2/3 of tongue
CN VIII: Vestibulocochlear?
perception of sound and control of balance
Damage of facial nerve leads too?
Bell’s palsy - drooping of one side of the face
CN IX: Glossopharyngeal?
sensory post. 1/3 of tongue, motor parotid gland, swallowing
CNX: Vagus?
motor and sensory for vital organs
