onset, latency, interruptions, quality, sleep walking and talking
GP tools for sleep monitoring?
auckland sleep questionnaire, sleep diary
Insomnias?
primary, secondary (substances, psychiatric), circadian rhythm problems, shift work, tired but wired
Excessive Daytime Sleepers?
difficulty in maintaining desired wakefulness, falling asleep inappropriately e.g. sleep apnoea, circadian rhythm disorder, narcolepsy
Parasomnia?
sleep walking, talking, sex, screaming, REM behaviour disorders, limb movements
Management of sleep disorders?
correct diagnosis first, multi-modal approach (psych, behavioural and biological), light treatment
Countermeasure for sleep deprivation?
2-8hr sleep prior to 24 hour sleep loss, 15min naps every 2-3 hours (>2 can be detrimental), drugs
Measures to enhance sleep?
adsress underlying condition, avoid drugs, relax at night, cut back on gadgets (blue light), bed restriction, mindfulness
