Lecture 21 - Ear Disease and Hearing Loss Flashcards
Hearing loss types?
conductive, sensorineural (inner ear), mixed, central disorders
Hearing loss leads to?
social isolation, endangerment, loss in seech, language, learning, auditory processing and employment
Process of diagnosing hearing issue?
air conduction audiogram -> MRI -> CT
Ear canal conductive deafness?
congenital, acquired (trauma)
Middle ear conductive deafness?
inflammatory, metabolic, congenital, tumour, trauma
Diagnosis conductive deafness?
air bone gap, Rinne -ve, Weber refered to deaf ear, low compliance tympanogram, absent reflexes
Blue ear?
otitis media w effusion (linked to mastoiditis)
Congenital causes of sensorineural hearing loss?
heriditary, heriditary delayed onset, acquired (birth trauma)
Acquired causes of sensorineural hearing loss?
noise, trauma, drugs, infection
Diagnosis sensorineual deafness?
no air-bone gap, rinne +ve, Weber referred to better ear, normal tympanogram
Differentiating nerual deficit rather than cochlear?
poor discrimination, reflex decay, not a progressive decline amongst different tones
Taking auditory history?
age, severity, onset, duration, trauma, drugs, family history (tinnitus, vertigo)
