Lecture 35 - Clin Evaluation of Balance Flashcards
Taking history?
ear, eye, vertigo pescence and duration, episodic nature
Precipitating factors?
head movement, noise, diving, migraine
Associated factors?
migraines, tinnitus, hearing loss, aural fullness
Tests?
head thrust, fukuda stepping, fistula, Dix Hallpike
Head thrust test purpose?
catch-up saccade when instructed to fix focus
Nyastagmus?
rhythmic pattern of eye movement w slow phase and fast recovery phase - fast recovery is the direction
Caloric testing?
stimulating ear w warm or cold water mimics head movement, but of only one direction causing COWS nyastagmic eye movement
Fistula test?
pushing ear moves eye to other direction due to fluid compression
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo?
<1min vertigo, associated w position, NO tinnitus or hearing loss
Management tactics?
of the condition, of the vertigo, maximise other systems (contact w environment, eyes open)
