Lecture 1 - Human Brain Flashcards
Foetal development of brain segments?
3 lumps w tail - forbrain (cortex with thalamus inside the lump), midbrain, and hindbrain (medulla, pons, cerebellum)
Cingulate gyrus location and function?
superficial to corpus callosum, complex higher-order thinking
Broca’s area location and function?
bottom of motor planning area homunculus immediately anterior to facial region of primary motor cortex; motor planning of speech
Temporal association cortex function?
memory
Parietal association cortex function?
3D recognition e.g. faces, non-verbal language and music (right side).
Cells of the primary motor cortex?
pyramidal shape, size proportional to distance travelled by axon
Order of homonculus - deep to superficial?
face, eyes, hand, torso, leg, foot
Wernicke’s area location and fucntion?
superior temporal gyrus, suppression of sounds and focus
Reading and writing areas of brain and connection?
supramarginal and angular gyrus, connected to motor planning of hands and eyes
Primary auditory cortex location, function and coding?
superior temporal gyrus within Wernicke’s area, perception of incoming sound, matrix interpretation
Arcuate Fasciculus function and deficit?
relay from Wernicke’s to Broca’s to generate verbal response to sound; connectional aphasia
