Lecture 22: Lymphatic System Flashcards
- tonsils
- thymus
- spleen
- lymph nodes
- blood capillaries
- lymphatic capillary
- afferent lymphatic vessel
- lymph node
- efferent lymphatic vessel
- lymphatic duct
what percent of interstitial fluid is picked up into capillary network? what is left
85% picked up
15% remains there, main content of lymph
what is content of lymph
dead cells, dietary fats, pathogen
fxn lymph node
filters lymph fluid. removes pathogens. site of proinflammation of B lymphocytes
what is the drainage point of lymph duct into venous system
junction of subclavian veins and internal jugular veins
- cervical LN
- Cisterna chyli
- Axillary LN
- Inguinal LN
what is the main reservoir of lymph
cisterna chyli.
sits in front of TXII vertebra
fxn thymus
t cell maturation. only 2% of t cells successfully pass. after age 30, disappears
where is thymus
superior and anterior mediastina, above heart
fxn spleen
filter old/damaged RBCs from blood and to store platelets
explain visceral surface of spleen
=medial
hilum, where splenic nerve/artery enter and exit.
what is long axis of spleen parallel to
rib 10 on left side
where is spleen
rib 9,10,11. left hypochondriac region
what are the 5 main tonsils
- pharyngeal- roof pharnyx. largest
2/3. palatine- behind oral cavity
4/5. lingual- posterior third tongue
which tonsils get removed first
palatine
what are tonsils
encapsulated lymphoid tissue. site of proliferation B Lymphocytees
- pharyngeal
2.palatine
3.lingual
tonsils
where does thoracic duct drain
jxn btw subclavian and internal jugular vein
where is thoracic duct located
left side
what is the equivalent to thoracic duct but on the right side
right lymphatic duct
what region of body does thoracic duct drain
entire body EXCEPT right half of head/neck & right upper limb & right half of thorax
those are drained by right lymphatic duct
where does right lymphatic duct empty into
jxn right subclavian and right internal jugular veins.
lower limb/pelvis drainage
1.inguinal LN (also receives anterior abdo wall)
2.pelvic LN
3.lumbar trunks
4. cisterna chyli
abdo lymph drainage
alimentary canal, liver, pancreas, spleen drain into pre-aortic LN
and then to cisterna chyli via intestinal trunks
lymph of posterior abdo wall, kidneys, gonads, adreansl drain into para-aortia LN, then cisterna chyli thru lumbar trunks
thorax lymph drainage
parasternal, diaphragmatic, intercostal, mediastinal LN. empties into thoracic duct on left, and right lymphatic duct on right side via bronchomediastinal trunk
head/neck lymph drainage
superficial and deep LN which eventually drain into left thoracic duct and right lymphatic duct via jugular trunks
upper limb lymphatic drainage
acillary LN
subclavian trunk
right lmphatic duct and thoracic duct
