Lecture 15: Visceral Nervous System Flashcards
difference btw autonomic and somatic NS
autonomic: target= smooth/cardiac muscle and glands. ALWAYS 2 neurons btw CNS and target
somatic: target=skeletal. always 1 neuron
which areas of spinal cord are innervated by sympathetic neurons? PS?
Symp: T1-L2 lateral horn
Para: Brainstem and S2-S4
which CN are in brainstem and send out autonomic innervation
CN III, VII, IX, X
what is a splanchnic nerve?
bypasses paravertebral ganglia, synapses with pre-vertebral. (only found in abdo cavity)
note: pelvic splachnic are the only PS splachnic nerve
which postganlgionic fibres are shorter? PS or symp
PS
label
A: Ventral root, carrying symp fibres
B: Gray Ramus Communicans carrying postganglionic fibres
C:Splanchnic neve
D:ganglia
E: White Ramus Communicans: carrying preganglionic fibres
what does T1 supply
symp fibres to head, neck, upper limb
what do symp fibres from t1-t4 reach
thoracic viscera
what do fibres from t5-l2 carry and reach to?
symp fibres which bypass paravertebral ganglia and instead synapse with prevertebral (splanchnic)
target: abdominal/pelvic viscera
L2= lower limb
source of PSNS fibres?
brainstem and s2-s4 lateral horn
what does CNX target (autonomic)
thoracic viscera and abdo until left third of transverse column
what does CNIX target autonomic
parotid gland
what does CNVII target autonomic
submandibular, sublingual, lacrimal glands
what does CNIII target
iris
where is the only parasympathetic splanchnic nerve
pelvic
arise from s2-24
