Lecture 13 Flashcards
Cholecalciferol is formed
in the skin
vitamin D as a hormone
it is a fat soluble hormone that is responsible for the absorption of calcium and phosphate in the intestinal tract
vitamin D is converted to
25 vitamin D
the final active form of vitamin D is
1, 25 Vitamin D, which circulates the blood
the formation of 1,25 vitamin D occurs in the
kidneys
role of PTH
increases the activity of the enzyme that converts 25- vitamin D to 1,25 vitamin D
PTH is stimulated by
the chief cell of the parathyroid
role of PTH in the bone
act to increase ca++ in the blood
it enhance the release of c++ in large reservoir in the bone
role of PTH in the kidneys
enhance the active reabsorption of calcium and magnesium
it also decrease the absorption of phosphate
role of PTH in the GI tract
allows for the up take of c++ by increasing the activation of vitamin D
thyrocalcitonin
it is a hormone produced by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland
role of thyrocalcitonin
it acts to reduce blood ca++ opposing to PTH
thyrocalcitonin role in the intestine
inhibit the absorption of ca++
thyrocalcitonin role in the bone
inhibit osteoclast activity
thyrocalcitonin
inhibit renal tubular cells reabsorption of ca++
