Lecture 12 Angiosperms Flashcards
What are Anthophyta?
The phylum Anthophyta, meaning flowering plants. That make up the vast majority of seed plants.
What does the root word “Anthos” mean?
Flower
What is a flower?
A flower is a specialized shoot with up to 4 whorls of modified leaves.
What are the 4 Whorls of modified leaves within flowers?
- Sepals
- Petals
- Stamens=
- Carpels
What are Stamens?
The anther + filament(male)
What are carpels?
stigma + style + ovary (female)
Where is the ovary located within plants?
ovary at base of carpel contains 1 or more ovules.
What are Perfect flowers?
Contains both stamens & carpels, and therefore complete (= perfect) in Linnaeus’ opinion.
What are imperfect flowers?
Flowers that contain either stamens or carpels
- hence a male (has only stamens) or a female flower (has only carpels)
Species with imperfect flowers can be _________
Monoecious
What does the root word “oikos” mean?
house.
What is a monoecious plant?
A plant with male and female flowers on the same plant.
What are Dioecious plants?
Plants that have male and female flowers on different female plants..
What are flower modifed to attract and why?
They are modified to attract pollinators, providing them with food rewards.
Are Non-Conifer gymnospersm or angiosperms more reliant on pollinators for reproduction?
Angiosperms
What are the food rewards in flowers?
nectar or pollen
What are fruit?
They are the mature Ovary containing seeds, being the container part of the ANGIOsperm.
What are cotyledons?
Embryonic seed leaves that are present within the seed along with the Radicle
What is a Radicle?
Embryonic root
What is the basis of the subdivision of anthophyta into the groups called
Monocytla and Dicotyla?
The number of cotyledons within a seed.
In angiosperm what is the megagametophyte called?
The Embryo Sac
How many cells are within the Embryo sac?
7 cells, far less than the gymnosperm megagametophyte.
