Lecture 11 (Part 2) Flashcards
Enterohepatic Circulation
process by which bile salts are reabsorbed in the gut
(the regulation of bile acid production, release and elimination by the gut and the liver)
Bile =
free cholesterol + bile salts
what percentage of cholesterol present in bile is reabsorbed and go back to liver
50% of cholesterol present in bile is reabsorbed and go back to liver
what percentage of bile salts are reabsorbed and go back to liver
97% of bile salts are reabsorbed and go back to liver
The “Diet-Heart” Hypothesis
suggests Cholesterol is related to heart disease, atherosclerosis specifically
Layers of the artery
Intima
Media layer
Ventisha
Intima:
inner portion of layer in contact with blood
(this is where lipids and macrophages build up in the artery)
Media layer:
smooth muscle that contracts or relaxes that allows artery to contract/relax
Ventisha:
outer connective tissue layer that holds everything in place
How the Oils Turn Toxic
The release of toxic aldehydes
by heating coconut, butter, olive, corn, and sunflower oils at 180 degrees celsius
What Oils are susceptible to oxidation when heated up
Oils that are high in PUFAs
Do Saturated fatty acids release more or toxic aldehydes than unsaturated fatty acids
Saturated fatty acids (like coconut oil and butter) release LESS TOXIC ALDEHYDES than unsaturated fatty acids
