Lec 4 Tissue 2 Flashcards
what are the general characteristics of CT?
most abundant tissue in body
composed of ABUNDANT amount of intercellular material, relatively few cells
-> epithelium: many cells, few intercellular
highly VASCULAR
general functions of CT?
protection
supports and binds tissues together
provides metabolic needs of other tissues
what ground substances is the intercellular matrix composed of?
fluid -> semi solid
blood -> bone
what fibers is the intercellular matrix composed of?
collagenous
elastic
reticular - thin threads, form a delicate network
what are the diff CT cell types?
fibroblast fat cells [adipocytes] macrophages plasma cells mast cells
which cell is the most abundant cell?
fibroblast
which cell produces antibodies?
plasma cells
which cell affects permeability of blood cells?
mast cell
what is the appearance and location of loose areolar ?
soft and fluffy, abundant intercellular material, few scattered fibers, very VASCULAR
packing material around organs
surrounds muscle and blood cells
binds skin to underlying muscle
what is the appearance and location of irregular and regular dense CT?
irreg: large number of collagenous fibers packed closely together
reg: poor blood supply, strong yet flexible
found in ligaments, tendons, outer covering of eye
what is the appearance and location of elastic CT?
irregularly arranged elastic fibers
can be easily stretched and returns to original size
found in walls of arteries, larynx, trachea, bronchi aka respiratory tract
what is the appearance and location of adipose CT?
composed of fat cells
found throughout body
what intercellular material is cartilage composed of?
condroitin sulfate (chondro = cartilage)
cells - CONDROcytes
fibers
what is the tough, outer covering of the cartilage called?
perichondrium
[peri = around]
what is the hyaline cartilage?
cartilagenous skeleton formed during fetal development
covers surface of long bones at the joint
found in portions of the respiratory tract
