Lec 1 The Cell Flashcards
What makes up the structure of the nucleus?
Chromatin, nuclear envelope, nucleolus
What makes up the chromatin?
DNA and protein (loosely tangled)
What is the nucleolus?
Site of RNA synthesis
What are the functions of the nucleus?
store genetic material, involved in cellular division, regulates cellular metabolism and activity of all organelles
what is the structure of the ribosome?
composed of rna and protein
what is the function of the ribosome?
major site of protein synthesis
what is the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum?
- membranous network of channels
- located throughout the cytoplasm
- continous with the nuclear membrane
what is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
provides a channel for communication and transport throughout the cell
what is the difference between rough ER and smooth ER?
rough ER has ribosomes on the surface. it is responsible for manufacture of proteins while SER is for lipid production, metabolism, and calcium storage.
which cell consists of stacked and flattened membranous sacs?
Golgi complex
what is the function of the Golgi complex?
storage of proteins, packages materials into granules or vesicles.
secretion -> cisternae
What is the internal compartment of the mitochondria?
cristae
