Q

what are the general characteristics of the epithelium?

A

consists of cells held closely by cellular adhesions resting on a basement membrane

highly cellular - very little intercellular material

AVASCULAR

Q

what does avascular mean?

A
  • not penetrated by blood vessels. recieves nutrients by diffusion from underlying tissue.

Q

membranous functions of the epithelium?

A

protection - covers body surfaces

lines body cavities [digestive tract, blood vessels]

contains cells for sensory reception

absorption and secretion of nutrients and other products

filtration (kidney)

6
Q

what are the diff cell layers of the epithelium? describe each

A

simple - one cell layer
stratified - many cell layers
pseudostratified - consists of a “single” layer of cells since each cell contacts the basement membrane

Q

what are the diff shapes of epithelium cells? describe each

A

squamous - flat cells.

cuboidal - cube shaped

columnar - rectangular shaped. most organelles have this type

20
Q

function and location of transitional epithelium?

A

func - stretching organs, cells can change shape, storage of fluids.

location - stretching organs = stomach, urinary bladder, uterus
