Children with specific language impairment have deficits in two areas
language and executive functioning/cognitive processing
Physical and environment factors that can impact language include
poverty, neglect and abuse, mom or dad using drugs or alcohol, and ADHD
What signs may a child with language disorders exhibit?
poor grammar, not enough language, cognitive deficits, poor literacy skills, inadequate or insufficient nonverbal communication, issues with social communication
What are the risk factors associated with a language disorder?
delayed production of 1st words, including mama and dada; being in a poor environment; genetic abnormalities; cannot learn speech sounds; avoiding eye contact and no social smile; mom uses drugs or has an infection such as HIV or Herpes; does not follow simple commands; does not gesture or only uses gestures; family history of language disorders; premature birth or low birth weight
What are the general characteristics of children with SLI?
Only have impairement in language, not with intelligence; issue could stem from them just being poor at linguistics or an issue with cognition, audition, intelligence, perception, and sensation; heschl’s gyrus and the planum temporale may be the areas affected in SLI. Frontal lobe damage is also present, which leads to executive function disorders.
What are the speech and language deficits of children with SLI?
Overextend or underextend words; shorter MLU, struggle to perceive or use morphemes (e.g., auxiliaries, present progressive -ing, articles), may use phonological patterns and have speech sound disorders, may struggle to start a convo or stay on the topic of conversation;
What are treatment principles when working with a child with SLI?
involve the family; use a multimodal approach and involve a multidisciplinary team; target academic and social language; target literacy skills if needed; use culturally and linguistically appropriate targets
What is milieu teaching?
a therapy technique in which a child is taught functional communication skills through everyday interactions
