Alternative and augmentative communication Flashcards
What is Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display?
a type of AAC device that can be used for low tech or high tech devices to help individuals who struggle to communicate to interact meaningfully. It provides much vocabulary that can be accessed quickly and efficiently to support language
What are primary components of an AAC device?
symbols and vocabulary words that are programmed into the AAC device
What are the secondary components of an AAC device?
how well an AAC user interacts with and uses an AAC device
The classification of unaided symbols can be separated into
linguistic and nonlinguistic
What is a low tech AAC device?
a device that is either not electronic or is a simple electronic device
What is a high tech AAC device?
a device that is complex (allows you to store words, pictures, and messages and generates voice)
What is the difference between iconic vs non-iconic?
iconic symbols represent the object they communicate, whereas non-iconic symbols are abstract, geometric, or arbitrary
What are the two ways that users send messages?
scanning and direct selection
What is the difference between direct selection and scanning?
Direct selection is a direct way of accessing messages via pressing an electronic key or touching an icon; scanning is the presentation of messages by the device or the communication partner
Who benefits from AAC methods?
children with autism, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, aphasia, apraxia, CP, laryngectomy, glossectomy, tracheostomy, spinal cord injury, and other conditions
What is milieu therapy?
a technique that focuses on integrating all of a child’s life experiences into therapy
What is a controlled situation communicator?
a communicator that can ask and answer questions with gestures, such as pointing, or using pictures or symbols. They are aware of daily routines and can often attend to print and confirm or select topics of interest
What is the difference beween gestured AAC and gesture assisted AAC?
gestured AAC is using only gestures to communicate and no instruments or devices are involved; gesture assisted AAC is using gestures plus an AAC device
What are premack symbols?
symbols or abstract plastic shapes on a gesture assisted AAC that are associated with a word or a phrase
What are rebuses?

What are picture exchange communication systems?
low-tech option in which a child is taught to exchange a picture with a partner to communicate intentions, wants, and needs
What are neuro-assisted AAC devices?
AAC devices that are used by individuals with limited hand mobility and motor impairments
What are myoswitches?
special switches that are activated by electricitiy from electrodes placed on the child’s skin. This allows for the display of messages on their AAC device
What are sig symbols?
ideographic/pictographic symbols based on ASL
What are blissymbols?
semi-iconic and abstract symbols that can be taught to speakers of any linguistic or cultural background
What is the revised participation model?
clinician identifies the client’s communication needs through a participation inventory, assess barriers to communication imposed by others, assess access barriers and the client’s motor, language, literacy, and other capabilities
What happens in direct selection?
users point with any part of their body they can use; they can also use a switch or other gestures such as blowing into a tube or moving their eyebrows
