Habitat
Human, mucous membranes of animals (resp. Tract, genitals, intestine), plants
Morphology
Smallest free living microorganisms 0.2-0.8 um
Pleomorphic (can change their shape), pear shaped, long branching filaments
(Chlamydia not free living, but also very small !)
Culture
Fastidious
Horse serum (sterols, FA)
Yeast extract, DNA, lactalbumin, hydrolysate, urea, cysteine
No turbidity!
Time to form colony: 7-14d, needs CO2
Selective isolation: penicillin, tallium acetate
Some species cannot be cultured:
M. Suis, m. Ovis, m. Haemocanis, m. Haemofelis

Glucose fermentation, arginine hydrolysis
Cholesterol demand
Antigens
Growth inhibition test
Metabolism inhibition test
Classification
Family: genome size, cholesterol demand, morphology
Genus: optimal temp., ph, glucose, arginine, urease
Pathogenicity
Saprophytes, faculative pathogens, pathogens

Human: m. Pneumonia= pneumonia
Cattle:
m. Mycosides ssp. Mycosides = contagious bovine pleuropneumoniae
M. Bovigenitalium = pneumonia, genitals
M. Bovis = arthritis, mastitis, pneumonia
M. Dispar = pneumonia in calves
M. Bovoculi = conjunctivitis
M. Alifornicum (?) + m. Canadense = mastitis
Species targeting sheep and goat
M. Capricolum ssp capripneumoniae = goat contagious pleuropneumoniae
M. Capricolum ssp capricolum = sheep, goat pneumonia, mastitis, arthritis, septicaemia
M. Mycoides ssp capri = goat
M. Agalactiae = sheep, goat pneumonia, contagious agalactia, arthritis
M. Conjunctivae = sheep, goat, conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis
M. Ovipneumoniae = sheep pneumonia, keratoconjunctivitis
Species targeting swine
M. Hyopneumoniae = enzootic pneumonia
M. Hyorhinis = polyserositis, rhinitis, arthritis
M. Hyosynoviae = arthritis
M. Suis = anaemia

M. Haemocanis= dog anaemia, haemobartonellosis
M. Haemofelis = cat anaemia, haemobartonellosis
