A

Smallest free living microorganisms 0.2-0.8 um
Pleomorphic (can change their shape), pear shaped, long branching filaments

(Chlamydia not free living, but also very small !)

Culture

A

Fastidious
Horse serum (sterols, FA)
Yeast extract, DNA, lactalbumin, hydrolysate, urea, cysteine

No turbidity!

Time to form colony: 7-14d, needs CO2

Selective isolation: penicillin, tallium acetate

Some species cannot be cultured:
M. Suis, m. Ovis, m. Haemocanis, m. Haemofelis

Important mycoplasma species

A

Human: m. Pneumonia= pneumonia

Cattle:
m. Mycosides ssp. Mycosides = contagious bovine pleuropneumoniae

M. Bovigenitalium = pneumonia, genitals

M. Bovis = arthritis, mastitis, pneumonia

M. Dispar = pneumonia in calves

M. Bovoculi = conjunctivitis

M. Alifornicum (?) + m. Canadense = mastitis
