Lab 1 - Upper Extremity Flashcards
What are the 3 major superficial back and shoulder muscles?
- trapezius
- deltoid
- latissimus dorsi
What are the actions of the trapezius? (2)
- elevates and retracts the scapula (as in shrugging your shoulders)
- it also helps rotate the scapula during abduction of the arm
What are the actions of the deltoid?
The deltoid has 3 heads which each perform different actions.
- abducts
- flexes
- extends the arm
What are the actions of the latissimus dorsi?
- extend
- adduct
- medially rotate the arm at the shoulder joint
What are the major actions of the pectoralis major?
adduct the arm and medially rotate it
What are the key muscles of the arm (upper extremity)?
- Biceps brachii
2. Triceps
What are the actions of the biceps brachii?
- it is a flexor of the arm at the shoulder joint
- It is a strong flexor of the forearm at the elbow joint
- It is a strong supinator of the forearm
What are the actions of the triceps ?
elbow extension
What is the origin and insertion of the triceps?
origin: scapula & humerus
insertion: olecranon process of the ulna
Which muscles of the forearm make up the anterior compartment? (all arise from the medial epicondyle of the humerus)
- pronator teres
- flexor carpi radialis
- palmaris longus
- flexor carpi ulnaris
- flexor digitrum superficialis
Which muscles of the forearm make up the posterior compartment? (all arise from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus)
- extensor carpi radialis longus
- extensor carpi radialis brevis
- extensor digitorum
- extensor digiti minimi
- extensior carpi ulnaris
What bones comprise the pectoral/shoulder girdle?
- Clavicle
2. scapulae
What bones make up the shoulder region?
- clavicle
- scapulae
- proximal humerus
What functions does the pectoral girdle serve?
- attachment of the upper limb to the axial skeleton
- strut placing the upper limb in a position in which it can move freely
- transmits forces to the axial skeleton
What are the 3 major joints in the upper extremity?
- glenohumeral joint (shoulder joint)
- Elbow joint
- 1st CMC joint (thumb)
