Kuehn - Gastrulation Flashcards
1. Describe the process of gastrulation, 2. Describe the structure and function of the notochord. 4. Identify and explain the significance of intra-embryonic and extra embryonic celom.
1
Q
When does gastrulation occur?
A
on the 15th day after fertilization (beginning of third week)
2
Q
What begins to form during gastrulation?
A
most significant part of embryonic development: formation of a MESODERM
3
Q
What is mesenchyme (4 - characteristics)?
A
- undifferentiated
- migratory cells (amoeboid) with leading edge and a trailing edge
- less well organized than epithelium
- surround themselves with extracellular matrix
4
Q
What is the mesoderm germ layer?
A
- undifferentiated tissue, made of mesenchymal cells
- middle of 3 primary germ layers
- develops into a variety of cells and tissues in the body
5
Q
What is a mesoblast?
A
first mesodermal cells before differentiating into somites
