What is the mechanism of action of ketamine?
A
Antagonism of NMDA (subtype of glutamate) receptors. Inhibits reuptake of catecholamines and serotonin.

What are the clinical effects of ketamine?
A
Dissociative anaesthetics. Analgesia, Bronchodilation, Stimulation of sympathetic nervous system, Increased cerebral blood flow, Partial amnesia, Minimal respiratory depression, CVS: positive inotrope, increased HR, increased BP, increased cardiac output.

What are the adverse effects of ketamine?
A
Unpleasant emergence phenomenon, laryngospasm, increased salivation, vomiting, myoclonus.

Give an appropriate route and dose for procedural sedation in a 6yo child?
A
1-2mg/kg IV

4-10mg/kg IM
