Anti-hypertensives Flashcards
1
Q
Classify the antihypertensives.
A
- Centrally acting (e.g. clonidine)
- Arterio-dilators (e.g. calcium channel blockers, hydralazine, nitroprusside)
- Veno-dilators (e.g. GTN)
- Diuretics
- RAAS (e.g. ACE-i’s, ARBs)
- Beta-blockers (negative chronotrope and negative inotrope)
2
Q
What is the mechanism of action of captopril?
A
Inhibits ACE, thereby inhibiting the effects of angiotensin II - reduced vasoconstriction, reduced salt and water retention by the kidneys, overall reduced BP. Also inhibits inactivation of bradykinin.
3
Q
What are the adverse effects of captopril?
A
Hypotension. Hyperkalaemia. Cough/angioedema. Acute renal failure.
Allergy. Fetal: teratogenesis. Rash.
(3/4 bold to pass)
4
Q
Which drugs interact with captopril?
A
Potassium supplements and Potassium-sparing diuretics - increase the hyperkalaemia.
