Beta-blockers Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the pharmacokinetics of metoprolol.
A
Administered orally or IV.
Bioavailability is about 50% due to first pass hepatic metabolism.
Large Vd
Half-life 3-4hrs
2
Q
How does metoprolol differ from propranolol in its action at beta receptors?
A
Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 antagonist, and it has much higher affinity for beta-1 receptors than beta-2 receptors. Propranolol has equal affinity for both beta-1 and beta-2.
3
Q
How do beta-blockers control hypertension?
A
Negative chronotrope
Negative inotrope
