IV fluids Flashcards
1
Q
How does Hartmann’s solution differ from Normal Saline?
A
Normal Saline contains only Na and Cl, and it is slightly hypertonic with an osmolarity of 300mOsm/L.
Hartmann’s contains Na, Cl, K, Lactate, Ca, and it is isotonic with an osmolarity of 279mOsm/L.
2
Q
What are the potential advantages of Hartmann’s solution in resuscitation?
A
Less hyperchloraemic acidosis.
Closer to physiologic fluid.
3
Q
What are the potential complications of IV fluid therapy?
A
Fluid overload, Air embolism, Hypothermia, Extravasation, Acidosis, Electrolyte abnormalities, Infection, Cerebral oedema, Haemodilution.
