A regular I (or “u” verb) is determined by the last syllable in the short or dictionary form:
- Replace う、つ、る with the ending って
- replace む、ぶ、ぬ with んで
- replace く with いて
- replace ぐ with いで
- replace す with して
ru verbs
Regular II or “ru-verbs”
- can be identified by るthat is proceeded by an “i” or an “e”
-replace ます with て:
irregular verbs
Irregular (replace ru or masu with te.)
- only two verbs in this group. suru and kuru.
suru to shite
kuru to kite
distinguishing between ru and u verbs
There are u-verbs that end in ru. The way to tell ru-verbs and u-verbs that end in ru apart is to look at the vowel sound preceding the ending ru. If there is an i or e before the ru it is
a ru-verb. If the ru is proceeded by any other vowel, the verb is an u-verb.
