Standing upright, feet together and facing forward. Arms by side, palms forward and thumbs pointing away from body.
Superior (Cranial)
Nearer to the head
Inferior (Caudal)
Nearer to the feet
Anterior (Ventral)
Nearer to the front of body
Posterior (Dorsal)
Nearer to the back of body
Proximal
Nearer to the trunk or point of origin
Distal
Farther from the trunk or point of origin
Medial
Closer to the midline
Lateral
Farther from the midline
Superficial
Nearer to the surface
Deep
Farther from the surface
Sagittal Plane
Vertical plane; divides body in to right and left halves
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
Vertical plane; divides body into anterior and posterior regions
Transverse (horizontal; axial) Plane
Horizontal plane; divides body into superior and inferior regions
