Important Review Items Flashcards
Axillary nerve innervates
Deltoid (flexion/extension, adduction/abduction, IR/ER) and teres minor (external rotation and adduction)
Radial nerve innervates
POSTERIOR COMPARTMENT OF ARM (extension of forearm) AND FOREARM (extend wrist and digits, supinate the hand, extend/abduct thumb.
ARM: triceps brachii
FOREARM: extensor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis, extensor digitorum, extensor indicis, extensor digiti minimi, extensor pollicis longus and brevis, abductor pollicis longus, supinator, brachioradialis
Ulnar nerve innervates
FOREARM: flexor carpi ulnaris, medial/ulnar half of flexor digitorum profundus
HAND: hypothenar muscles (abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi brevis, opponens digiti minimi), 3rd and 4th lumbricals, palmar and dorsal interosseous muscles, adductor pollicis.
Median nerve innervates
ANTERIOR COMPARTMENT OF FOREARM (flex wrist and digits, pronate the hand, flex the thumb, adduct/abduct hand) EXCEPT FOR flexor carpi ulnari and ulnar/medial half of flexor digitorum profundus (ulnar nerve)
HAND: thenar muscles (abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis, and opponens pollicis), 1st and 2nd lumbricals
FOREARM: pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus, pronator quadratus
Musculocutaneous nerve innervates
ANTERIOR COMPARTMENT OF ARM (flex arm and forearm and supinate hand)
Biceps brachii, brachialis, coracobrachialis
Lateral pectoral nerve innervates
pectoralis major (adduction and internal rotation of arm)
Suprascapular nerve innervates
supraspinatus (initiate and assist abducting arm) and infraspinatus (external rotation, adduction, abduction of arm)
Long thoracic nerve innervates
serratus anterior (protract and upwardly rotate scapula)
Upper subscapular nerve innervates
subscapularis ( internal rotation of arm)
lower subscapular nerve innervates
subscapularis (internal rotation of arm) and teres major (internal rotation, adduction, and extension of arm)
Thoracodorsal nerve innervates
latissimus dorsi (internal rotation, adduction, extension of arm, and respiration (“cough muscle”)
Medial pectoral nerve innervates
pectoralis major (adduction and internal rotation of arm) and pectoralis minor (draws scapula downward)
Medial brachial cutaneous nerve innervates
sensory only
Medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve innervates
sensory only
“Winging” of scapula
paralysis of long thoracic nerve, which innervates serratus anterior
