intro to anatomy Flashcards
2 main types of anatomy
gross (don’t need microscope)
and histology (need microscope)
functional approach of anatomy
- based on functional systems
- allows function to be considered
- bridge to physiology
regional approach to anatomy
- anatomy of specific regions
all use of animals goes through
university animal ethics committees
terminology is based on
latin
median plane
divides body in equal left and right halves
sagittal plane
divides bondy into UNEQUAL left and right portions
transverse plane
perpendicular to medial plane
dividing body in cranial and caudal parts
dorsal plane
diving body into dorsal and ventral portions
cuts perpendicular to both median and transverse plane,
longitudinal plane
cuts parallel to long axis of organ or limbs
cutting the length of limb or organ
ventral
towards ground ie chest
anterior
dorsal
away from ground ie back
posterior
cranial
towards head
superior
caudal
towards tail
inferior
rostral
on head closer to nose
caudal on head
means closer to top of head rather than rostral
palmar vs plantar
palms vs soles of feet
medial
towards median plane
lateral
farther from median plane, more on the side
proximal vs distal
closest to point of origin, further from point of origin
superficial vs deep
closer to surface vs nearer from surface
axial vs abaxial
for digits
axial towards middle and abaxial towards outside
visceral
associated w organs within body cavities
parietal
associated with body wall
ipsilateral
same side
contralateral
opposite side
supra
above
infra
below
thumb is digit number
1
protraction
move whole limb cranially
retraction
move whole limb caudally
extension
movement of one bone in relation to another in which angle at joint is increased
flexion
movement of one bone in relation to another in which angle at joint is decreased
pronation
palms down
supination
palms up
(soup, bowl of soup, palms up)
abduction
movement away from median plane
adduction
movement towards median plane
