V important to indigenous people; the story of the 3 legged dog who turned to stone and is a rock in their community; then people came to cull dogs and shot the only one who couldn’t run away; the 3 legged dog who was named after the stone and was a rlly important part of their community
kinship
Over 500 nations
Within the nations there are clan groups
Within clan groups there are family groups
Then within that the individual
Nation → clan → family → individual
moiety
Splits everything in half; latin for half
Splits world into two equal halves, mirror images in balance with each other;
Each nation may call the different moieties different names; example where prof worked they were Dhuwa and Yirritja so everyone is either one or the other
totem
- Each person will have at least 4 totems
- One or more for nation
- One or more for clan
- One or more for family
- And individual totem; given to them at some point in their life
- Each totem also placed in moiety
- Each person is responsible for their totem; ex if an animal if your totem you must learn, protect it and not allowed to hunt it, but other people who don’t have that totem are allowed to hunt
