Immunology Flashcards
List components of innate immune system.
Physical barriers, phagocytes, complement, interferon
What type of macrophage is found in the liver?
Kupfer cells
What PAMP does the TLR3 PRR bind?
Viral double stranded RNA
What happens if the innate immune system is evaded?
get sick and/or acquired immune system takes over
Name the interferon released by infected cells?
IFN alpha and beta
Name a type of cytokine that attracts immune cells to inflamed tissue?
chemokine
All leukocytes are identified by this molecule?
cluster of differentiation (CD) 45
What cell initiates adaptive immunity?
phagocytes
Compare the response of the adaptive immune system from first time to second time exposure?
first exposure response takes 7-10 days
the second response faster and stronger
What is the difference between active and passive immunity?
active- exposure to antibody or vaccine
passive- immunoglobulin from mother to baby or transfusion
What are two ways that complement is activated?
pathogen -innate
antibody- adaptive
What two types of cells do B cells differentiate into?
plasma cells and memory B cells
What is unique about NKCs?
NKCs kill cells that do not have an MHCI complex on them
Where do mast cells reside?
skin, mucosa, conjunctiva, mouth, nose
What cytokine promotes diapedesis of PMNs?
IL-8
