immune system Flashcards
What is cortisol and what does it do?
Produced in adrenal cortex. Anti-innflammatory. Decrease production of interleukines and stabilize lysosomes
What is Melatonine and function?
Pineal gland(epiphysis) Impact sleeping cycle. Supress immune system reactions
What are interferones?
group of signaling proteins made and released by host cells in response to the presence of pathogens, (viruses, bacteria, parasites, tumor cells.)
What are interleukines?
a group of cytokines (secreted proteins and signal molecules. They promote the development and differentiation of T and B lymphocytes, and hematopoietic cells.
3 functions of immune system?
- protection against foreign agents
- self-regulation –> immunosurveilance
- immunotolerance –> does not react to bodys own cells
What are allergies?
Disturbance in immunotolerance
What are APC?
Antigen presenting cells- macrophages, langerhans cells. Display pieces of phagocytosed bacteria on cell membrane.
Which cells “reads” the MHCII signals?
T- helper cells
Which cell activate B-cells?
T-cytotoxic
Which cells produce antibodies against antigens?
B-cells
What are different methods of T-cells and B-cells?
T-cells –> direct contact, cell mediated (knife)
B-cells –> antibodies in blood (gun)
What is obsonisation?
Making cells more “tasty” for phagocytes (salt)
How many percent of T-lymphocytes pass the “test” for recognizing MHCI/MHCII in thymus?
only 5%
What are NK-Cell?
belong to lymphocytes, part of non-specific immune system. Don’t need MHC.
What is MHC?
Major histocompatibility complex
