Erythrocyte count Flashcards
What is erythrocyte count?
The most common measurement in laboratory blood investigations.
What is used to count the RBC?
A Bürker chamber
How is the Bürker chamber divided?
Into individual fields differing in shape and size:
Bigger squares - 1/25mm2
smaller squares - 1/400 mm2
rectangles 1/100mm2
How are RBC counted?
In smaller squares or rectangles following the Bürker rule and by a meandering movement of the sample.
Which solution is used and what does it do?
Hayem solution. It destroys all the WBC so there is only RBC in the sample.
How is the formula for RBC if you count 20 rectangles and have 200 times dilluted blood?
Ø/20 x 1000 x 200 x 10^6 = 5,6x10^12
How is RBC measured within the haematological analyzer?
As sphering of RBC and detection of laser light scatter interfearing with erythrocytes.
What is anisocytosis?
striking difference in erythrocyte size
What is Poikilocytosis?
occurence of erythrocytes with abnormal shape
What is Erythrocytosis?
increased number of erythrocytes (dehydration, stress, neoplasm)
What is erythrocytopenia?
decreased number of erythrocytes.
What affect the number of erythrocytes?
sex and species dependant.
Does the RBC change with temperature, climate or nutrition, or change during the day?
NO!!!
