Histology - Breast Flashcards
what vessels supply the lateral aspect of the breasts?
lateral mammary branches from the lateral thoracic artery
what vessels supply the medial aspects of the breasts?
the medial mammary branches from the internal thoracic artery
what forms the venous drainage from the breasts?
medial and lateral mammary veins
how are lipid droplets secreted from the breast?
via apocrine secretion
how are proteins secreted into breast milk?
merocrine secretion
aka exocytosis
what is apocrine secretion?
product secreted surrounded by a membrane and carrying a small amount of cytoplasm with it
what is merocrine secretion?
product secreted via vesicles which merge with a membrane to release their contents
what changes occur in the breast during the luteal phase?
epithelial cells get taller
lumen of the ducts enlarges
secretions in the ducts
what changes occur in the breast during the first trimester?
elongation and branching of ducts
proliferation of epithelial and myoepithelial cells
what changes occur in the breast during the second trimester?
glandular tissue develops
lymphocytes infiltrate connective tissue
what changes occur in the breast during the third trimester?
secretory alveoli mature and develop extensive RER
what changes occur in the breast following the menopause?
secretory cells degenerate leaving only ducts
reduced collagen and elastic fibres
what type of epithelium covers the surface of the nipple?
highly pigmented + keratinised stratified squamous
what is found at the core of the nipple?
lactiferous ducts - one for each lobe of the breast
what lines the lactiferous ducts?
at the surface = stratified squamous
deeper = stratified cuboidal
