Group Dynamics and Cohesion Flashcards
What is a Collective Indentity
The team can be recognised easily since they are usually wearing the same coloured kit.
often team members will feel a strong affiliation to the team and gain a sense of pride when they wear the kit
What is Interaction
the way that team players work together to complete a task
What is communication?
to help with interaction, the individual players in the team should talk to each other and communicate non-verbally.
What is a Shared goal or purpose
The prospect of achieving success is what often keeps players in the team and working for each other.
What are the four stages of group formation suggested by Tuckmann. Explain each stage.
Forming - Group comes together and gets to know each other
Storming- stage of potential conflict when individuals may compete with others to establish position, status or role
Norming -team begins to settle down and co-operate, with intension to achieve their goals
Performing-all the players are now interactive and working together to achieve their goals
Define Cohesion?
The tendancy for individuals to work together to achieve their goals, the forces that keep the group members on task.
What strategies could be used to reduce social loafing?
set individual goals Give specific roles Promote motivation Use statistics Reward exceptional contribution
What strategies could be used to reduce co-ordination problems.
Set goals Involve all in goal setting specific roles clear tactics Promote motivation Maintain communication Get fitter
What strategies could be used to promote cohesion
involve all in goal setting Establish group identity Team meetings to resolve conflict Individual goals Set more challenging goals
What are the features of a team or group?
interaction
communication
Shared goals and values
Collective identity
What do you understand by the term social loafing?
The loss of motivation of an individual team member
What might affect the potential productivity of a sports team?
Having the most experienced, skilful players and facilities and how these players interact.
According to Steiner
Actual Productivity= Potential Productivity- Losses due to faulty process,
Explain each of these terms
Actual productivity - Performance achieved
Potential Productivity - Team’s best possible performance
Faulty Processes - the tings that go wrong to reduce group outcomes and prevent group potential being reached
Suggest potential causes of losses due to faulty group processes
Co-ordination losses
Players skills/tactical failings lack of team work
More interactive sports more difficult to coordinate
Ringlemann Effect
Motivational losses
Social Loafing
What is the Ringlemann Effect?
When group performance decreases with increasing group size
