The tendency to approach or avoid competitive situations. Drive to succeed minus need to avoid failure.
Define need to achieve (NACH)
The player welcomes competition. Approach behaviour
Define need to avoid failure (NAF)
Avoidance behaviour. The player avoids risk.
Highlight some characteristics of NACH
Task persistence, seek challenge, take risks, approach behaviour, enjoy evaluation, not afraid to fail, value feedback, attribute success internally, cofident, want to improve

Avoidance behaviour, dislike feedback, take the easy option, give up easily, lack confidence, avoid 50/50 challenges.

What strategies could a coach use to develop approach behaviour in their players?
Reinforcement, Attribute success internally, allow success, improve confidence, goal setting

A belief in the ability to master a task

A belief in the ability to master a specific sporting moment

A belief in the ability to do well in a range of sports
What is competitive orientation?
The degree to which a performer is drawn to challenging situations
What is objective sporting situation?
The performance takes into account the situation in which the task is being undertaken
