Magnesium Sulfate Class:
- Electrolyte
- Tocolytic
- Smooth muscle relaxant
Magnesium Sulfate
Mechanism of Action (MOA)?
Magnesium Sulfate MOA:
- Decreases myocardial and neuromuscular irritability
- Inhibition of muscular excitability
Magnesium Sulfate
Indications?
Magnesium Sulfate Indications:
- Torsade de Pointes
- Hypomagnesemia
- Pre-term Labor (PTL)
- Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH, pre-eclampsia and/or eclampsia)
- Hyperreactive airway - severe asthma

Contraindications?
Magnesium Sulfate Contraindications:
- Use cautiously in patients with impaired renal function and pre-existing heart blocks (relative)

Adverse Reactions?
Magnesium Sulfate Adverse Reactions:
- CV: Hypotension, Flushing, Heart Block, Asystole
- Resp: Respiratory Depression
- CNS: Drowsiness, Hypothermia, Depressed Reflexes
- GI: Nausea
Magnesium Sulfate
Adult Dose?
Magnesium Sulfate Adult Dose:
- Torsade de Pointes: 1 -2 G IV diluted in 50-100 ml NS or D5W over 1-2 minutes, followed by the same amount infused over 1 hour
- Hypomagnesemia: 1-2 G IV diluted in 50-100 ml NS or D5W over 5-60 minutes
- Resp/Asthma: 2 G IV diluted in 50 ml NS or D5W over 5-10 minutes
- Pre-term labor (PTL): 4-6 G over 15-20 minutes
- PIH, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia: 3-6 G over 10-15 minutes

- 20 minutes for IV infusion (respiratory)

Special Notes?
Magnesium Sulfate Special Notes:
- O2 should be administered to patients receiving Magnesium Sulfate
- Evaluate cardiac status and ECG assessing for prolonged PR and widened QRS intervals
- Keep calcium chloride 10% 10ml available to reversed magnesium toxicity
- Eclampsia may occur up to six weeks after delivery
