Mechanism of Action (MOA)?
Diazapam (Valium) MOA:
- Acts on parts of the limbic system, thalamus, and hypothalamus producing calming effects
- Decreases seizures by increasing the seizure threshold
- Transient analgesic, amnesic, sedative
Diazapam (Valium)
Indications?
Diazapam (Valium) Indications:
- Grand mal seizures, especially status epilepticus
- Transient analgesia/amnesia for medical procedures (fracture reduction, pacing, cardioversion)
- Delirium tremens

Contraindications?
Diazapam (Valium) Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity
- Acute Narrow Angle Glaucoma (Relative)

Adverse Reactions?
Diazapam (Valium) Adverse Reactions:
- CV: Bradycardia, hypotension, cardiovascular collapse, phlebitis, vascular spasm
- Resp: Respiratory Arrest
- CNS: Confusion, coma, diminished reflexes
- Other: Burning proximal to IV injection site; local irritation, swelling

Adult Dose?
Diazapam (Valium) Adult Dose:
- 2 mg increments slow IV push. Administer no faster than 2 mg/minute

Pediatric Dose?
Diazapam (Valium) Pediatric Dose:
- IV: 0.2 - 0.3 mg/kg every 15-30 minutes (max of 1.0 mg/kg); administer IV over at least 3 minutes or until seizure activity subsides
- Rectal (6 years of age or less): 0.3 - 0.5 mg/kg rectally at IV push rate; may repeat in 15-30 minutes at 0.25 mg/kg
