Mechanism of Action (MOA)?
Morphine Sulfate MOA:
- Elevates pain threshold by acting on the pain receptors in the brain.
- Depresses CNS, depresses brainstem respiratory centers.
- Increases venous capacitance, vasodialates arterioles, reducing preload and afterload.
- Histamine release.

Morphine Sulfate Indications:
- Analgesia
- Pulmonary edema (Cardiogenic)

Contraindications?
Morphine Sulfate Contraindications:
- Respiratory depression
- Head injuries
- Elevated intracranial pressure
- Asthma (relative)
- Abdominal pain (relative)

Adverse Reactions?
Morphine Sulfate Adverse Reactions:
- CV: Brady/Tachy-dysrhythmias; orthostatic hypotension
- Resp: Respiratory depression or arrest
- CNS: Excess sedation, seizures, pupillary constriction
- Derm: Histamine release may cause local urticaria

- 1 - 3 mg increments slow IV push (over 1 - 5 minutes) until desired effect

- 0.1 - 0.2 mg/kg slow IV push
