Glandular Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
What two structures in the body can secrete a substance?
A goblet cell
A gland
What is a goblet cell?
A single cell capable of secretion
What is a gland?
A group of cells capable of secretion
What are the two different types of glands?
Exocrine glands
Endocrine glands
Write a note on exocrine glands.
2
Secrete products into ducts or lumen of organs (digestive enzymes)
Can be found on the surface of the body e.g. sweat gland
Write a note on endocrine glands
2
Ductless glands
Secrete hormones into interstitial fluid e.g. insulin hormone
Where do exocrine glands secrete their product?
They secrete into a duct (tube) that is connected to the surface
What is secreted by goblet cells in the GIT and respiratory tract?
Mucous
Why is mucous needed in the GIT?
To protect the surface cells
Why is mucous needed in the respiratory tract?
2
To moisten and warm the incoming air
To trap any dust particles
What type of gland is present in structures where more protection is required (e.g. trachea)?
Submucosal glands
What are submucosal glands?
2
These are glands found below the surface
They are attached to the surface by a duct
What is the advantage of submucosal glands?
They allow increased secretions
How do endocrine glands secrete their product?
They secrete into the interstitial fluid and are spread via the blood
