1.6 Cell Differentiation Flashcards
What is formed when cells differentiate?
Tissues are formed
Give three examples of differentiated cells.
Liver cells
Fat cells
Nerve cells
How do cells differentiate?
They differentiate by turning off all genes not needed by that cell
What happens to cells in order to become red blood cells?
They loose their nucleus and all internal organelles except haemoglobin
What is haemoglobin?
A protein with an iron molecule attached
What is the function of haemoglobin?
It can attach O2 and CO2
What results when a cell looses their nucleus and all internal organelles except haemoglobin?
A red blood cell
What percentage of blood is red blood cells?
45%
What are fat cells also called?
Adipocytes
Describe the appearance of fat cells?
2
Most of the cell is taken up by a large drop of lipid/fat
All organelles are pushes to the edge of cell
What are the two main functions of fat cells?
Provides an energy reserve
Protects and insulates us
What are neurons?
Nerve cells
What are the two main functions of nerve cells?
They have special processes that allow communication between parts of the body
Receive and send signals
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells that carry out a specific function
