Diabetes Flashcards
What is the full name of diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus
How many types of diabetes are there?
Three
Type 1
Type 2
Type 3
What is type 1 diabetes?
Insulin dependent
What is type 2 diabetes?
Insulin resistant/non-insulin dependent
Describe type 1.
There is an absolute deficiency of insulin due to a lowering of the number of beta cells
Describe type 2.
Normal insulin levels but cell receptor mechanism is not working or is not as sensitive as it should be
List some of the metabolic disturbances in a diabetic (without treatment)
(3)
Acceleration of the breakdown of the body’s fat
Catabolism of fat and protein leads to weight loss
Mobilisation of stored fat leads to fat deposits in the blood vessel walls, leading to arteriosclerosis (plaques)
What does the mobilisation of stored fat lead to?
This leads to fat deposits in the blood vessel walls - leads to arteriosclerosis
What is the formation of plaques in the blood vessels called?
Arteriosclerosis
