gastric and duodenal ulcers Flashcards
peptic ulcers treatment: identify the drugs used in the treatment of peptic ulcers and their mechanisms of action, and explain why combination treatment is the current best practice
how are antibiotics used to treat peptic ulcers
remove H. pylori infection
how are proton pump inhibitors used to treat peptic ulcers
reduce acid production from parietal cells
example of proton pump inhibitor used to treat peptic ulcers
omeprazole
how are histamine H2 antagonists used to treat peptic ulcers
reduce acid production from parietal cells
describe combination treatment why it is best practice
combine multiple antibiotics (2) with proton pump inhibitor (change antibiotics if original antibiotics are not working, and do not use if NSAID-caused - instead use H2 receptor antagonist to decrease acid secretion)
why is combination therapy best practice
eliminates bacterial infection whilst also decreasing acid secretion (treat underlying cause and symptoms together)
