Final: Chapter 1- Introduction To Microbiology Flashcards
What is microbiology and what types of organisms are studied in this field of biology?
Microbiology is the study of living things too small to be seen without magnification.
Microbes studied are bacteria, archaea, Protozoa, algae, fungi, heminths, viruses
Which of the microbes studied are considered non-living?
Viruses
How are algae and plants similar?
They are both photosynthetic
What does ubiquitous mean?
They are found all over
Why are archaea considered extremophiles?
They tend to live in extreme/harsh conditions where most other life forms cannot survive
What is a pathogen? Are the majority of microbes pathogens?
Pathogens are microbes that cause disease. A majority of microbes are non pathogenic
What is a symbiotic relationship?
A relationship between two organisms. There are mutual, comensal, and parasitic symbiotic relationships.
What is an emerging disease?
A disease that has appeared in a population for the first time, or that may have existed previously but is rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range
